Periodontitis is a rather serious disease accompanied by inflammation of the gums, as well as destruction of the surrounding bone tissues.
When bleeding gums are detected, it is often thought that the cause is too hard toothbrush bristles. As a result, a brush with softer bristles is chosen and the gums stop bleeding, but this does not mean they are healthy! The danger of the disease lies in its invisibility to the naked eye.
In periodontitis, pathogenic microbes living in the hard and soft dental plaque penetrate under the gum, causing inflammation. Inflammation leads to the destruction of the periodontal ligament, the formation of deep periodontal pockets (the space between the tooth and the gum), and the breakdown of bone tissue. Teeth that have lost bone support become highly mobile.
What are the causes of gum inflammation?
In most cases, periodontitis is the consequence of improper hygiene.
Inflammatory processes can arise due to:
- lack of proper oral hygiene;
- incorrect physiological bite;
- incorrectly placed fillings and orthopedic constructions (for example, crowns);
- some chronic diseases (for example, diabetes mellitus, thyroid dysfunction).
Symptoms of periodontitis
- bleeding gums;
- pain;
- difficulty chewing;
- unpleasant breath odor;
- formation of interdental spaces;
- changes in the position and mobility of teeth;
- loss of individual teeth.
