Contour gum aesthetics with laser

A harmonious smile combines “white aesthetics” – straight white teeth, as well as “pink aesthetics” – healthy, proportionate gums in terms of size and shape.

During the examination, the dentist evaluates the condition of the gumline and the health of the gums themselves, determining how symmetrical the festoons (gum edges that touch the tooth crown) are. Symmetrical rounded edges with pointed gum papillae are considered normal. The color of the gums should be gently pink.

Contouring gum aesthetics have indications such as:

  • difference in gum length;
  • excessively short teeth – by adjusting the gum, their length can be increased;
  • diseases causing soft tissue reduction, leading to tooth neck exposure;
  • bone loss, resulting in decreased gum volume;
  • maintaining a high level of smile aesthetics during prosthetics.

Possibilities of contouring gum aesthetics

Laser contouring of the gums, depending on the existing problems and required correction, can involve various interventions. Gingivectomy aims to remove part of the gum. Gingivoplasty is used to correct the size and shape of the gums and, if necessary, may include cleaning gum pockets. Vistibuloplasty, on the other hand, allows for the addition of missing gum tissue. During this procedure, the gum is incised, its length is adjusted, and the gumline is aligned. These operations are important not only for maintaining a beautiful, harmonious smile, but in some cases, they are necessary for preserving tooth health, preventing the progression of certain dental diseases.

Laser Gum Contouring

Performing contour correction using a laser is currently the most progressive method. The laser provides higher precision in incisions compared to a conventional surgical scalpel. Since the laser “seals” blood vessels during incision, the operation becomes bloodless and the area of preparation is better visualized.

Additionally, the laser has a sterilizing effect, reducing the risk of infection and complications. With laser contouring, neighboring tissues are less traumatized, reducing the duration of the operation and the rehabilitation period afterward.
